If you’re like me – I don’t just want to fish, I want to look good doing it! Women’s fishing apparel has come such a long way over
the years. Years ago we would simply have to wear men’s clothing in the smallest sizes, then came the marketing genius of, “shrink
it and pink it”. Neither effort produced appropriate fishing clothing for women.
Today, things have changed. Sporting goods stores
have rows and rows of clothing designed and manufactured specifically for women that fit our curvier frames and flatter our forms.
Pro shops carry brands that specifically address the issue of women’s fishing apparel that can be worn all day and contribute to a
successful day on the water.
Things you should consider when shopping for fishing clothing for women:
FABRICS
First,
consider the conditions you will be fishing in and then you can select a fabric to fit your environment. When we travel we select
fabrics that don’t wrinkle much and protect us in the elements.
Cotton – a good choice for warm weather because it will dry quickly
but it will wrinkle and you have to consider shrinkage.
Polyester – also dries quickly and doesn’t wrinkle easily and is lightweight.
Nylon
– A great choice when you’re going to be scooting around on rocks or fishing in a rugged environment because it’s very strong. Wrinkle
resistant, keeps you cool, and dries quickly.
Supplex – a new state-of-the-art fabric that looks and feels like cotton but is
as strong as nylon. If you can afford it, invest in it.
Gore-Tex – 100% water-proof and wind-proof but still breathable and lightweight.
A great choice if you’re going to be in very wet conditions.
Fleece – perfect for cold weather. Snuggly, dries quickly, and works
well layered under a water-proof wind-breaker.
Other Considerations when selecting women’s fishing apparel:
Clothing now
comes with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF)! The UPF rating is similar to the SPF rating used to rate sunscreen’s effectiveness.
UPF is affected by the weave of the fabric and the color. The closer the knit, the higher the UPF.
Wearing fabrics rated with
high UPF does not negate the need to wear sunscreen but the extra protection is healthy.
Bug proof fishing clothing for women!
Look for this added protection if you’ll be fishing in mosquito infested waters or tick and chigger filled hikes. Clothing treated
with this protection needs to be washed less frequently as it reduces the effectiveness but the good news is, you would never know
the difference by looking at it! The treatment is invisible and odorless.
Get on the water – and look good doing your dance!
